All Hail the King! 7 Sep 2011

Its NHH's 75th Anniversary!!!

As a result of the anniversary, most lessons were cancelled for the day. Which means that we get to celebrate together with everyone else in the school!

Let me give you a brief background of NHH...

Background of NHH

The Norwegian School of Economics (Norges Handelshøyskole) or NHH is a public business school situated in Bergen, Norway. It was opened in 1936 by King Haakon VII. NHH is Norway's oldest business school and arguably the best business school in Norway.
History

1900–1936: Establishing a business school in Norway

1936–1963: NHH opens and sets to work

1963–1980: A new campus and rapid growth

1980–2000: Specialisation and international expansion

2000–present: Continued growth and development into the 21st century

June 1, 2011, the school changed its English name from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration to the Norwegian School of Economics.

I heard from my fellow exchange students that later in the afternoon, there would be cake and an official ceremony which the King of Norway would attend! Woah! How often do you get to see a King up close and personal? I couldn't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!

King Harald V, the king of Norway

Harald V was born on 21 February 1937). He succeeded the throne of Norway upon the death of his father Olav V on 17 January 1991. The son of the then-Crown Prince Olav and of Princess Märtha of Sweden, Harald was born at the Crown Prince Residence at Skaugum, Akershus, Norway.
Harald V is the formal head of the Church of Norway and the Norwegian Armed Forces. He has two children, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise. His grandchildren are Maud Angelica (2003), Leah Isadora (2005), Emma Tallulah (2008), Princess Ingrid Alexandra (2004), and Prince Sverre Magnus (2005).

We had cake in the canteen before the official ceremony.

Then we went into the Assembly Hall for the ceremony. There were security checks before we entered the Hall. Lots of police and security personnel. But that is to be expected if the King of Norway visits your school. We were a little late so there were no more seats on the first floor. We proceeded to take our seats upstairs.

The ceremony programme was as followed:

The Big Business Band was quite good. They sang and played famous English hit songs. I enjoyed their performances. It was interesting sitting through the award ceremony and listen to the various accomplishments famous professors made to the business world. However, I was disappointed by the fact that the King did not give a speech. He merely came in, sat down then left at the end. Still it was an enjoyable ceremony.
